Forge of Souls

Forge of Souls

The Forge of Souls is a giant production facility that builds Soul Grinders. From what I understand, Soul Grinders are giant engines that grind souls which were stolen by the Lich King. Bronjam keeps watch over the production of the engines while the Devourer of Souls keeps watch over the souls the Lich King has stolen.
“Inside the Frozen Citadel” [Horde] [Alliance] is an optional quest you can pick up in Dalaran. It’s not required, but you get a few gold and some rep for turning it in, so it’s worth the time.
Regardless if you grab that quest or not, once you are inside The Forge of Souls, you either talk to Jaina or Sylvanas, depending on your faction. There you will receive the quest Echoes of Tortured Souls. It is a pretty simple quest, you are just asked to kill the 2 bosses inside the instance, Bronjahm and Devourer of Souls. This will serve as your attunement to the next instance in The Frozen Halls, The Pit of Saron.
Things to be aware of:
- You can fall off the edges in this instance.
- Lots of AoE damage on almost every pull.
- Spiteful Apparition spawn as you make your way through the instance, casting spite which does about 6k dmg [aoe] to anyone near it.
- Battered Hilt drops here, so loot everything.
- Soulguard Watchmen spell reflect.
- Spectral Warden have a curse that reduces healing effects by 75%. They also use an instant cast AoE shadow bolt that does 4-6k dmg to everyone within 40yard range. Pulling 2 of these would be very difficult. They can be silenced with improved counterspell, silence shot, garrote or silence, but not interrupted as the spells are instant cast.
This is the first boss you will encounter in this dungeon. The fight is fairly simple, but healing intensive. This boss has 2 phases. In phase one, Bronjahm will pull a Corrupted Soul Fragment from a random player in the group. The soul fragments will head towards the boss and will heal him if they reach him. The group should dps these down as quickly as possible. Slowing effects like chains of ice and cone of cold are very effective when you need to buy a few more seconds to kill the fragment. The tank should also try to move the boss away from the fragments, if possible, to avoid healing the boss. Occasionally Bronjahm will cast Magic’s Bane. This ability does quite a bit of aoe damage, so healers should be prepared for occasional heavy aoe healing. Just rinse and repeat this until about 30% when Bronjahm will switch to phase 2.
When phase 2 begins, Bronjahm will teleport to the center of the room. From the center, he will cast soulstorm. This ability really isn’t a big deal if you stay in melee range of the boss. Bronjahm will fear someone in the group randomly, sending them running out into the soulstorm. They will require heavy healing since soulstorm does damage every second and slows movement speed by 50%. This phase is pretty simple. Just top off feared players and burn the boss.

This boss is slightly more complicated than Bronjahm and I have seen a countless amount of careless dps get owned while fighting this boss. There are several things to be aware of. Occasionally the Devourer will leap towards a target and create a well of souls. This is very similar to a void zone. Standing inside the well will inflict 3,000-4,000 shadow damage, so don’t stand in it. Once you engage The Devourer of Souls, he will constantly cast phantom blast if he is not doing something else. It is possible to interrupt this. If you do, it will be easier on your healer.
Another thing to be wary of is when you see the emote “Devourer of Souls begins to cast Mirrored Soul!” This means the boss has casted Mirrored Soul on a random party member. Whenever mirrored soul is active, any damage taken by the Devourer is mirrored to the player. It is very important to stop dps while this spell is active, or you will kill your party member.
Eventually you will see the emote “Devourer of Souls begins to Unleash souls!” This means that the Devourer stops whatever it is doing and begins to release a large amount of tormented souls. These souls can’t be targeted or damaged. They don’t hit you for very much individually, but there are a lot of them and they can become overwhelming. Running away from them will keep damage to a minimum.
At random, the Devourer will emote “The Devourer of Souls begins to cast Wailing Souls!” This is a 90 degree sweep of the room, similar to C’thun’s Dark Glare. Just stay away from the mouth laser and you will be okay. Otherwise, you’re pretty much dead.
To sum this fight up simply, stay out of the purple circles on the ground, when you see mirrored soul emoted stop dps, run away from ghosts, and stay away from the laser.
After you kill this boss, Jaina/Sylvanas runs in and you will be able to complete your quest. They will give you a continuation quest that will send you into the Pit of Saron.
